The Bells

"n a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire, In a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire:
The creatures are ringing the deviled bells, yet they find joy in it, even if it is not a beautiful sound

"appealing to the fire"

these words convey a sense of unity amongst the beats, despite it being an ugly bell song, they collectively believed the sound is nice, and they brainwashed themselves into believing its a nice bell.

These feelings show that a sense of unity and comfort can be misleading.

These words show that despite these bells also sounding like "a groan" the people still enjoy them.

" Is a groan. And the people—ah, the people— They that dwell up in the steeple, All alone, And who tolling, tolling, tolling, In that muffled monotone, Feel a glory in so rolling"
The iron bells are appealing to some people

Half a Day

"I did not know a single one of them, and none of them knew me. I felt I was a stranger who had lost his way."
The narrator's father is trying to convince him that school isn't a bad place to be and that he'll always be there waiting for him at the end of the day.

The words "I felt I was a stranger" shows that not having a sense of unity with the others makes her uncomfortable

this made me deepen my thinking on the narrators feelings. The narrator feels alienated, as though they don't belong The narrator is lonely because he hasn't met anyone yet.

Since the narrator is not at ease and doesn't have a sense of unity, we can see the consequences and how she is uncomfortable in her situation instead of at ease.

"School's not a punishment. It's the factory that makes useful men out of boys."
The main characters father is explaining to his son that send him to school was not a punishment and rather that every child must pass through school to become a man.

This quote relates to How does sharing with others lead to a sense of fulfillment, because the father is asking his son to go to school to be like other men, and he must be like the others to feel fulfilled.

these words conveyed a feeling of duty, since everyone else went down this route you are expected to as well.

This helped me realize that if not everybody went to school it wouldn't be frowned upon to not go to school and pursue other things in your youth.

Handsomest Drowned Man in the World

"Fascinated by his huge size and his beauty, the women then decided to make him some pants from a large piece of sail and a shirt from some bridal linen so that he could continue through his death with dignity."
The people of the village have decided to help the old handsome mans body.

"Fascinated by his huge size and his beauty".

These words convey that because of the way the old handsome man is they are willing to help him.

These feelings reveal that when people feel a certain way about someone, in this case the old handsome man being attractive, they are less/more willing to help him based off of it. The people collectively agree he is handsome which is ultimately subjective, which creates a sense of unity and willingness to help the old handsome man.

"They had been playing with him all afternoon, burying him in the sand and digging him up again, when someone chanced to see them and spread the alarm in the village.
The children are playing with a dead mans body, for a long time unbothered.

The words "playing with him all afternoon" connects to the unit question because it creates a sense of unity amongst the children. If one person is able to do something without bother than that happens over and over again, and people dont pay attention anymore.

These words convey a sense of being unbothered, and that when a group agrees that something is reasonable nobody defies that.

These feelings connect to the unit question, because comfort and fulfillment comes from other people agreeing with you and acting like you.

This relates to the unit question because it shows a group of people running, together yet they are only running because they are running together, they cant communicate to the animal. Yet the animal still runs with them, unaware of where he is going.
