PROTISTA KINGDOM

The Protista Kingdom encompasses a diverse array of eukaryotic organisms, categorized into plant-like, fungi-like, and animal-like groups. Plant-like protists, commonly referred to as algae, include red algae, dinoflagellates, euglenoids, brown algae, diatoms, and green algae.

Brown Algae

Has many plant-like structures

Seaweed with many pigments

Green Algae

Closely related to plants

Contain green pigments

Red Algae

contains red chlorophyll

used in hair conditioner and ice cream

needs only small amount of sunlight

Multi-cellular seaweed

Euglenoids

use flagella for movement

autotrophs or heterotrophs

Green, usually found in fresh water

Dinoflagellates

Responsible for red tides

All have two flagella

Come in a variety of colors, including glow in the dark

Surrounded by stiff plates

Diatoms

Used in scouring products and insecticides

move by oozing chemicals out of slits in cell walls

Float near surface of lakes and oceans

Have glass-like cell walls

Algae

All algae contain chlorophyll and photosynthesize

Most live in water, some live on damp surfaces

Very important in oxygen production

Use cilia to move and eat *cilia are hair-like projections that move like oars in a wave-like motion * cilia sweep food to the ciliates

Sarcodines

Example: amoeba

have a contractile vacuole, a structure that collects and repels extra water

feed using pseudopods, or false feet

Fungi-Like

Two main groups
Water Molds and Downy Mildew

Responsible for Irish Potato Famine

They grow in tiny threads that look like fuzz

Most live in water

Slime Mold

They range from very tiny to as large as several meters

Lives in moist, shady places

Brightly colored

Use spores to reproduce
Spores are tiny cells that can grow into a new organism
They have cell walls
Heterotrophs
