The document outlines a comprehensive plan for promoting both scientific proficiency and mental well-being among students. It introduces interactive and engaging methods for teaching lab safety, such as charades to act out broken rules and Kahoot games to identify lab equipment.
Debate:
Students will be be presented
with the debate question, Is
Climate Change Real? They will
Also be assigned a stakeholder
role (Prime Minister, scientist,
oil lobbyist etc) Students will
research their perspective, and
present it during the debate
Literacy Test Practice:
I do an activity with my
grade 10s every semester
during the climate unit or
optics unit. They have to
read the given article and
answer comprehension
questions similar to that of
the Literacy Test. We use
actual practice or past
literacy tests for this
Metacognition
Concept Mapping:
Students will create a mindomo mind map
after each of their units to help organize
the big ideas of the unit, and to use as a
study tool for the assessment. Students will
review their concept map with their teacher throughout
Reflective "Quiz":
At midterms, students will
complete a quiz ranking themselves
in each of the learning skills, and will
create a goal to revisit at the end of the course
Mental Health
Deep Breathing Meditation:
Before a test, we will engage in some deep breathing exercises so that students can feel calm before they write any assessment. Students can also shake our glitter jar if they are stressed or overwhelmed.
Warm Fuzzies:
Encourage students to write little thank you messages to each other for simple tasks- someone cleaned up their lab, or helped them study for a test. Students place these warm fuzzies in a jar and at the end of the month, they are read aloud so everyone can feel great about the nice things they did for each other
Prayer Walk:
This is a great strategy for any student wanting to participate
In our school, we will walk to the chapel once a month to
pray together as a class to thank God for the gift of life. In
Our science classes, we also thank Him for presenting us with
the mysteries of science that we discover every day. If students do not identify as religious, modify this activity by walking outside, and feeling greatful. Create a gratitude journal and write three things each day that you were thankful for
Lab Safety
Lab Rules Charrades:
Students have to act out through
a game of charrades a variety of
broken rules for the audience to
guess. The correct guesser will
then act out the correct following
of that rule
Lab Equipment Kahoot:
Students will have a pictured
piece of lab equipment and have
to guess what it is called, and
what it is used for
WHMIS walk around:
Students will walk around
each lab bench and identify the symbols they see on each substance
