In the context of football regulations, there are strict rules to ensure player safety, particularly concerning tackling and what constitutes a defenseless player. Tacklers are prohibited from aiming above the shoulder pads of the ball carrier and from using the crown of their helmet to make contact.

A player who receives a blind-side block
A player obviously out of the play
A player on the ground
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking the ball
A receiver attempting to catch a pass or who has not had time to protect himself as the ball carrier
A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass

Rules

Applies to defenseless players
Tackler may not aim above the shoulder pads of the ball carrier
Tackler may not hit crown of helmet with any part of their body
