The savanna

The African savanna is a diverse ecosystem characterized by its grasslands and scattered trees. Elephant grass, which thrives near water sources, is a vital resource for local farmers who use it to feed their livestock.

Climate

The Savanna biome has a wet/dry climate.
During the wet season, the plants are lush and colourful, and the rivers flow freely. In this time, the animals all migrate back.

It is usually cooler during the dry season by a few degrees. Because it is in the tropical latitudes that is still hot enough, The savanna climate has a temperature range of 68 and 68 degrees

Grass
Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is a creeping grass, and will creeps along the ground and root where ever a node touches the ground, forming a dense mat.

Elephant grass

It grows in dense clumps of up to 10 feet tall. In the savannas of Africa it grows along lake beds and rivers where the soil is rich. Local farmers cut the grass for their animals.

Trees
Jackelberry tree

The Jackalberry tree can grow very tall, up to 80 feet, with a trunk circumference of 16 feet. Most trees don't grow that tall, however, and heights of 15 to 18 feet are more usual

Boabab

It can grow up to 25 meters tall and can live for several thousand years. The baobab is leafless for nine months of the year!

Animals

Elephants
These elephants are seen as the largest of the subspeices, and are easly distinguished by there large ears! Another distinguishing feture of the elephent is that its front legs are noticabley larger

Elephants are found throughout the grassy plains and bushlands of Africa. Savanna elephants live in eastern and southern Africa, where the highest densities are found in Botswana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa.

Have tusks but are usually smaller then that of the men

Loins
Often referd to as the "power house" of the savannas. coming in at 265 pounds some even reach a whopping 420!

In thier prides, it is the female lions who go out to hunt for food. the male lions will opt to stay with the young, protecting them from any harm.

Females

Are usually smaller and reach about 1.1 meters high

Female lions do not grow manes

Can be as big as 1.2 metears high

Male lions can grow large, lociouse manes
