The human memory system is divided into three primary categories: short-term, sensory, and long-term memory. Short-term memory is characterized by its limited duration and capacity, typically holding information for no longer than 20 seconds and encompassing about seven pieces of information.

Semantic Memory -our knowledge of facts about the world
Episodic Memory -recollection of events in our lives
Procedural Memory -memory for how to do things, including motor skills and habits

Short-Term Memory -retains information for limited durations

Reasons we lose information
Interference -the loss of information due to the competition of additional information
Decay -the fading of information over time
Capacity
Magic Number -is 7 plus or minus 2 piece of information
Duration -is no longer than 20 seconds

Sensory Memory -is the brief storage of perceptual information
