Reflecting on an advanced placement calculus class brings to mind several vivid memories and sensory connections. The class involved both declarative and non-declarative learning processes.

Fun times in my AP Calc Class

Reconstruction or Reconsolidation Errors

Reconsolidation
I thought that I first learned the principle of derivatives in my pre-calculus class. I had the same teacher and many of the same students. However, derivatives was the first unit in our AP Calculus class. Because of the similarities I had gotten the memories confused.
Reconstruction
In my precious math class I learned how to change the settings on my calculator. I hadn't quite done it correctly, but I wasn't doing very complicated math and didn't need the advanced settings for what was expected of me. The change in the settings didn't effect what I was doing. In this class I needed to use the advanced settings and had to relearn how to change them correctly.

Declarative or Non-declarative

Non-declarative
Plotting the points of the graphs. After enough practice it required less thinking and was just more of a process we went through.
Declarative
Constantly thinking about came next in the equations and how to long it onto the calculator when asked.

Memory Fragments Associated

Listening to my teacher singing funny songs that he had created to make the math more enjoyable
Making fun group projects with my peers
Having extra studying sessions with them and supporting each other throughout the class
Coming in every single morning every day to come and get extra help from my teacher

Cognitive Hooks

Acronyms
PEMDAS: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally. This was used to help us remember the order of operations

Sensory Connections

Emotional
I had an amazing teacher in this class. I am reminded of the fun times in the class and how appreciated I felt.
Calculus was a very stressful class. When I am reminded of this class I become a little anxious
Sight
Looking at the actual calculus problems
Taste
The taste of my pencil as I anxiously studied problems and thought of ways to solve them
Touch
Calculators. Any time that I am using an advanced Ti84 I am reminded of this class.
Smell
My teacher loved to drink coffee, in particular carmel coffee. Whenever I smell carmel coffee I am reminded of the early mornings coming in for extra help.
Hearing
My calculus teacher was a very funny man. I will never forget the sound of his voice when he was excited for us or his overly dramatic laugh.
