Yann wrote a short story called “Mister Ali and the Barrelmaker” and later in 1990 he wrote “The facts behind the Helsinki Roccamatios”. The short story led to him winning the 1991 Journey Prize and was part of the 1991 Pushcart Prize Anthology. In 1992 he would win the national magazine award gold for one of his short stories and Border Crossing magazine would feature one of his short stories. Yann credits the Canada council of Arts for helping him in his career. The council rewarded Yann with writing grants in 1991 and 1997 and in the author’s note in Life of Pi he personally thanked them. After writing short stories for a while, Yann wrote his first novel called Self. It was released in 1996 and the novel was about a writer who woke up one morning discovering that he is now a woman. In September 11, 2001 Yann released his second novel Life of Pi . This would be Yann’s greatest book in his career as he won countless awards and is a well known novel from across the world. Yann’s inspiration for the novel came from a review of the story Max and the Cats by Moacyr Scliar. Yann received a lot of criticism from the press and he didn’t talk to Scliar about his story and many thought he copied Scliar's work. Yann defended himself by saying that he didn't even read the novel and he admits saying his inspiration for the story came directly from him. Yann’s third novel would be published in 2010 and was called Beatrice and Virgil. The story is an allegorical tale that has portrayal of the Holocaust. In 2016, he published his fourth novel The High Mountains of Portugal. The story was about three characters in Portugal in which they show how they dealt with love and loss.
