Helping with Planning Strategies

This is the perfect situation of "what will help some, will help all". Teaching planning and organizational skills to LD learners is key to becoming independent and functional students. If a teacher lays out a big assignment in an accessible fashion, LD learners don't get turned off by feeling overwhelmed and defeated before they even begin!

Recognizing Signs of Struggle

Explaining Anxiety
Signs of Anxiety - list

It took three years and many experts (Sick kids, Emergency Doctors, Naturopaths, etc.) to narrow down my daughter's Stomach Pain as an Anxiety Disorder that coexisted with a severe learning disability. I am constantly reminded how important is to tune in to the signs that a child is struggling - they really are very silent and hidden internally!

Reflections:

How can the teaching profession become more in tune with the mental health and wellness needs of exceptional learners? Beyond experiencing anxiety themselves of supporting a family member with this, how can the average educator possibly know it's importance for learners?
