The Protestant missionaries chose to construct their missionaries near rivers. The missionaries hoped to first Christianize the Native Americans and change their social behavior. Native Americans helped the trade it is important to recognize the importance of the contributions of the women. Gray persuaded the American Board to send more missionaries to the pacific northwest. Missionary Era (1834-1847) The mission built near Salem, Oregon. the missionaries soon followed the furtrpers adn traders to the west. Getting furs to market The fur pelts were so strong in demand, that's all that the traders wanted to trade for.
