J2K Volunteering Ideas

Organizing a series of events focused on educating participants about Israel is a central theme. Activities could include discussing Israeli cuisine, hiking, and cooking meals, much like previous interactive experiences.

Hi All:

Here is a way for us to build upon ideas created as we move into the next stage of our trip by volunteering within the greater Pittsburgh community.

Please use this mind map to comment and add ideas for how we as a group can help share the knowledge we've gained from our visit to Karmiel and Misgav with the greater J'Burgh and Pittsburgh community.

Thanks,

David

work more with Venture Outdoors to do fun, active things around the city together

Subtopic

Do something around Pgh in the name (spirit of) Karmiel/Misgav/P2K/Israel, etc

Educational classes - partner with places like the PHLF - help to educate Pittsburghers on basic skills that are not always easy to learn
bring/distribute kishorit toys/goat cheese/dogs to Pgh and the US if not already, to increase their market
start a kibbutz/commune type program in Pgh
create a Pgh branch of Children's Village or some in that spirit, i.e. join Big Bros Big Sis
Volunteer, paint apartments, build something , etc for lower class citizens around here

Education about Israel to J'Burgh Participants

Hold an event where participants "create" a map of Israel...out of ice cream, out of a collage, whatever...to help them remember and learn about the various regions and boundaries/cities within Israel. (fun, interactive...)
Plan a series of seminars/discussions to educate and discuss different topics and challenges facing the current and future state of Israel as a country. Possibly at a bar, a "drink and discuss" or other similar activity. This would be like the J Course sessions but would be led within the group, not by a specific person/Rabbi.
Hold a short discussion/presentation at each Shabbat + event
Have a series of Israel events...Israeli dishes we ate, maybe go for a hike and cook lunch/dinner like Nir did with us (interactive)
How do we use the knowledge gained to educate other J'Burgh participants?

Main topic

Education about the Karmiel Misgav / Pittsburgh Partnership

Short presentations to Hebrew schools, Sagis, etc...
Education - Where can we take the slideshow etc... Once they have been created?
I can help work on a slideshow and put together information on the various viewpoints we learned throughout our trip (Sophia)
