Rapid Writing

The exercise begins by explaining to students that the goal is to foster fluency in generating raw ideas without the concern for grammar or errors. A topic is chosen, which can either be random, related to current class material, or suggested by the students themselves.

The letters in PMI stand for the three sections of the PMI chart: Plusses, Minuses, and Interesting things. The I can also stand for Implications on some topics.


Type in your topic.

After

Add the interesting things or implications that come along with your topic.

Get in groups of 2/3 students and reorganize each written piece to collaboratively compose a new piece
Choose one member of the group to read out loud their final copy
Discuss the topic by reading out loud what they have written
Ask students to count number of words and raise their hands to show increasing number of words until there is 1 or 2 students left

Add the drawbacks of your topic.

Signal to stop writing and drop all pencils
Give one minute warning before time ends
Signal to begin once time has been set

Before

Add the advantages of your topic.

Make sure the students do not stop writing before the time runs out or teacher signals to stop
Explain the purpose of rapid writing is to encourage fluency in generating raw ideas without worrying about grammar or error
Choose a random topic or topic being studied in class or invite students to suggest a topic
