What factors effect your coming of age experience?

The transition from adolescence to adulthood, known as coming of age, is influenced by various factors. Family support, or familial capital, plays a crucial role in this process. A supportive family can provide a smoother transition, as seen in the contrasting experiences of two characters, Ari and Dante.

What factors effect your coming of age experience?

In life there are many factors that effect your coming of age experience. Mainly, I think familial capitol is to blame. If Ari were to have a supportive familal capitol, he would of had the smooth transition to adulthood that Dante experienced.

DANTE

Coming of Age

"'But they understand the old world, the world they came from- and I don't. I don't belong anywhere. That's the problem'"(Saenz 88). Although, he has this outlook from his parents, he, like most teenagers, still is finding himself, and is yet to be completely comfortable with himself.

"'So you're really going to be an artist?''Absolutely.'He looked right at me.'You don't believe me?'"(Saenz 73). This shows how he has Aspirational capitol, because he knows what he wants and knows what he wants to be. The tone in this quote tells me that he also is motivated, because he is so decisive. Having this will make your coming of age experience much better, because in this case, he has a reason to grow older and has something to strive to be.

"It made me smile, the way they got along, the easy and affectionate way they talked to each other as if love between a father and a mother was simple and uncomplicated"(Saenz 26). This shows how Dante has a strong familial capitol, because the relationship between him and his parents is so loving and affectionate. This relates to coming of age, because having parents who support you will allow you to grow and become comfortable with yourself.

ARI

Coming of age
Comfortability with oneself

"For some reason I had a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach. Not just the dream thing, the kissing thing, the body thing and the cold shower"(Saenz 301). Basically this shows how he is very dumbfounded by the kiss. I took interpreted this that he was questioning, or wasn't yet comfortable with his sexuality.

Cultural Capitol
Aspirational Capitol

"'I don't think I'm so smart. Not like you, Dante"(Saenz 35). This shows how he doesn't really have the drive or is motivated to pursue anything. If anything he is doing the opposite. The lack of self confidence shows also his lack of motivation. This will make it very hard to transition to adulthood, because you will not have a reason to want to grow older.

Familial Capitol

"When I was eight, I didn't know anything about war. I didnt even know what a conscience was. All I knew is that sometimes my father was sad. I hated that he was sad. It made me sad too. I didn't like sad"(Saenz 14). This shows how he lacks the familial capitol, because he doesn't, have a strong relationship because of the ptsd his dad suffers from. This will detract from a smooth coming of age experience, because without a strong family unit, you will have to rely on your friends, which in most cases, are more likely to change.

ARI AND DANTE

Text Structuring
Throughout the whole book the dialogue is very choppy and in a way more realistic. I don't have a specific example, because it is pretty much continuous whenever they talk. This helps show their relationship, because when they talk they are so cohesive and it appears to be effortless. Also it shows that, although they are growing up or "coming of age", they're friendship is just as close knit as during their earlier teenage years.
