Appearance Vs Reality

The narrative explores the theme of appearance versus reality, showing how initial impressions often mask deeper truths. Central to the story is Rank, a character grappling with his past and the misconceptions surrounding him.

Appearance Vs Reality

Appearance Versus Reality

The novel demonstrates how the appearance of someone cannot just be looked upon and assumed, that who they truly are; the reality, may be unexpected. Who Rank is, his parents relationship, and Adam have all been overlooked throughout the novel. The appearance of each character does not do justice for the reality of who each individual is and what they went through/ are.

Problems

Being able to accept that Adam has written the book

To understand that what Adam has done may not have been an intentional act to hurt Rank.

Writing the emails to Adam

To allow Adam to know what truly happened in his life, to give Adam "the real story"

Spending the summer with Gord

Not loosing his mind with Gord and finish writing his 'book".

To open up about the past

To talk about the pain Rank has suffered throughout the years. To talk about what happened with Mick Croft, The Icy Dream, hockey, reform school, and especially his mother and how betrayed he feels by Adam.

Setting

New Brunswick University

Where Rank met his friends Kyle, Wade, and Adam.

The Temple

Rank and the boys would hang out here and host parties. This is also where the boys had their differences. Rank confessed all of his sins to Adam laying on the Temples living room floor.

Goldfingers

Where Kyle worked and gave Rank his bartending/ security job. This was also the last place Ranks friends saw him due to an incident that occurred one night.

The Icy Dream

The ice cream shop Gord built and where Rank worked. Here is where Rank was sent outside by his father to get rid of the punk; Mick Croft, and "crush his scull". Rank did not want to fight Mick but as it was started by Mick, Rank finished it with one punch to the face resulting in brain damage to Croft.

Court

Where Rank faced Mick Croft and the jury after giving Mick a brain injury. His loss to the court sent him to reform school.

Reform School

Where Rank got the opportunity to play hockey.

Hockey

Rank became one of the best players on his team due to his size and agility. This got him a fully paid scholarship to New Brunswick university.

The house Gord built

Where Rank grew up ink with his mother Sylvie and his father Gord

Characters

Sylvie

"A Godess" as described by her son, Rank. Married to Gord in a verbally abusive marrige. Died when Rank was a teenage.

Sylvie was put on a pedestal by Rank, he spoke so highly of her and questioned her as to ""why did you marry the prick""(Coady 5). Her marriage was Gord was verbally abusive. It did not seem that a women of her strength and power would allow for such a thing to happen.

Adam

The antagonist. Wrote a novel about Ranks life. Was a nerd when he met Rank in university, they became close acquaintances.

Adam was described as a harmless nerd who cared about his grades above anything else. It was not expected of him to be able to tear Rank apart so easily.

Rank

Adopted by Gord and Sylvie when he was a baby. Grew to be 6'4" by the age of fourteen. The protagonist, writing to Adam; the antagonist.

Because of his height Rank was constantly being overlooked as this ' big bad punk'. This was very untrue. His figure did not reflect his personality.
