Canadian History 1960-Present

From the 1960s to the present, Canada has undergone significant legal and political changes. Pierre Trudeau played a pivotal role in the early 1980s by advocating for the return of the Canadian constitution, which aimed to provide Canadians with a distinct charter of rights and freedoms.

Technology

Definition: machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.
The Alberta Oil Boom: The advancement of technology had led to the Alberta oil boom. Once the discovery was made using giant drills to dig in the earth through technology, Jim Gray had been able to find this "modern day gold rush."
Ingis Factory Strike (1983): The year 1983 was when the Ingis factory had experienced a strike. This strike was because of technology being introduced to Canada which is where it had taken over many employees jobs causing unemployment.
Introduction Of Computers (1980): The first ever computer had been introduced in the year 1980 and was moved into factories, homes, and offices in Canada. Computers had changed the lives of Canadians positively and negatively.

Discrimination

Definition: The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, sex, age, or disability.
Baltej Singh Dhillion And RCMP (1983): In the year 1983, Baltej Singh Dhillion had arrived in Vancouver and was quickly faced with discrimination and racism. Despite the hatred, Baltej wanted to become a Canadian police officer in the country's top of the line force called the RCMP. One of the symbols for the RCMP is a broad-brimmed hat this wouldn't be good for Baltej Singh Dhillion as he is a man who wears a Turban. Baltej was sent hate mail, threats, and had faced discrimination for not folowing RCMP "dress code" by wearing his Turban instead of the hat. In the end the charter rights and freedoms of Canada were on Baltej's side which had allowed him to become the first man in th RCMP wearing a turban.
Montreal Massacre (1989): The Montreal Massacre that had happened in 1989 had involved a 25 year old man who had walked into a school and shot and killed 14 women, believing that feminists had ruined his life. This tragic incident is a prime example of discrimination and hate towards women.
The Irene Murdoch Case: The Irene Murdoch case was a divorce case that had spread anger through the country. Irene had claimed half of the family's cattle ranch in her divorce, but had worked hard alongside her husband for a total of 25 years. Irene had thought that the work would've been 50/50 but the court had said that it was 100% her husbands farm. Irene had worked a lifetime of hard work, she was not given a fair compensation by the court because she was a female. This example of discrimination had led to women standing up and protecting their rights.

Indigenous Rights

Definition: Indigenous rights are those rights that exist in recognition of the specific condition of indigenous peoples.
The Meech Lake Accord: The meech lake accord was a deal started by prime minister, Brian Malroney to revise Canada's Constitution by getting Quebec’s approval and signature on the Constitution. He gathered 10 Premiers and united a deal to revise Constitution. But, there are people who are angry with the Accord including Pierre Trudeau and especially native leaders like Elijah Harper, who is angry that the Charter does not recognize the Aboriginal people. As indigenous peoples were not really recognized during the lake meech accord it had soon died and did not lead to anything.
Oka Crisis: During the Oka crisis, the mohawks of Kaneastake are protesting about a golf course that was being built which had also intervened with their claimed land. The crisis had quickly became national ordeal once a police officer had been killed, after 78 days the standoff ended as the golf course expansion had been cancelled.
The Berger Inquiry: The Berger inquiry involved a judge Thomas Berger, who had proposed a gas pipeline through McKenzie valley. This decision had threatened the way of living for many indigenous peoples, including the Dene living in the area. In the end, Berger said “the social impact on the native people will be devestating, and economic benefits will be limited” meaning that the Dene had a voice and rights, that Berger listened to.

Laws And Legislatures

Definition: Legislation is a written law that provides rules of conduct
Free trade elections (1988): The free trade elections of 1988 had been for Canada and the United States of America to come to an agreement for trades. This was an issue in Canada that had led to many positive and negative opinions and was also one of the most issues in Canada. In the end the agreement for free trade had been made a law which had led to more jobs as well as a better relationship between Canada and the U.S.
Pierre Trudeau and the constitution (1981): In summer of 1981 Pierre Trudeau wanted to bring back the Canadian constitution, he wanted to bring it back for Canadians to have their own charter rights and freedoms. The charter rights and freedoms is what makes up majority of Canada's most important laws.
The Referendum (1980): The Referendum of 1980 involved Quebec voting whether or not they would be apart of Canada. This had led to many mixed opinions involving both Trudeau and Levesque, the federal government and premier of Quebec. In the end, the side that had voted no had won which means that Quebec will be apart of Canada.
