Electricity generated at power plants is transferred to substations using step-up transformers, which increase the voltage for efficient long-distance transmission. Upon reaching the substation, step-down transformers reduce the voltage to safer levels for home use, typically at 220 volts for heavy appliances and 120 volts for regular outlets.
