Does Yahoo’s Telecommuting Ban Signal a Trend?
Yahoo announced that it has eliminated the option of telecommuting in order to have everyone work closely at the same place to foster better communication but there might be other reasons for that related to Yahoo’s slow down of business, some companies are still going ok with having telecommuting system installed in place. The Yahoo trend is not expected to reach all the big companies that are doing OK because the economy is growing and employers can no longer dictate working terms on the employees.
Telecommute
Telecommunication is working in group who are in different places at the same time, this abroad working team has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages is the saving money of gathering and traveling to meet, and also in the same company and for daily works can be done at home or from any place the employee like. But the disadvantages come from the misusing of technology or not proper tools to communicate.
Examples of telecommute:
1)Customer Service Representative
A popular telecommuting option is customer service. As a representative, an individual works from home part-time or full-time. Telecommuters in the customer service industry require additional phone lines, internet and a computer of their own. These individuals are responsible for an array of customer service roles, such as call center support, tech support, in-bound sales, reservations and general sales.
2)Writer/Journalist
Newspapers and magazines do not require journalists to work from the agency itself. In fact, most journalists complete their work on the road or from home, but still maintain an office or desk at the company they work for. Since journalists can do research, interviews and write from home, this is a desirable job for individuals looking to telecommute.
3)Virtual Assistant
Some companies and individuals look for virtual assistants who can take on a variety of administrative duties from home. These individuals answer phones, take messages, create business documents and participate in online or telephone conferences for note-taking purposes, among other duties.
4)Editor
Just like journalists, editors can telecommute from home. These individuals typically work directly for newspaper and magazine publishers, but some editors also work as freelancers. Editors receive their work directly from an in-house staff and may or may not correspond directly with the journalist.
5)Graphic Designer
The internet is in high demand for businesses, and since business owners do not have the spare resources to hire an in-house graphic designer for their marketing and online materials, they hire telecommuters. These individuals work temporary, part-time and full-time. Graphic designers must meet deadlines provided by clients and follow any specific guidelines their clients request.
What you think ?
I think this way of working provide a good motivation for some jobs which no need for physical attending and its not include physical activity like mechanical work, footbol playing, .. etc. This kind of work will save a lot of time especially in big cities or remote area which need long time for communication as well as the cost saved from this transportation and extra work done. this will help in company competitive advantage.
opinion
1) it may reduce work-family conflict
2) improve productivity
3) reduce travelling cost
what conditions can it work?
1) national and international company
2) in bigger market
Not work.
1) low education employee
2) bad connectivity
Conclusion...
More and more businesses are looking to telework in an era of domestic and overseas outsourcing - but also while considering environmental concerns, rising gas prices, and struggling employee morale. (To be sure, we spend an enormous amount of time in our cars, staring at brakelights, fuming at the eternal congestion ahead. We arrive at work sullen and tired, and attempt to start our day
Telecommuting is very important in the organization and it increase innovation and give employees more creative work and this increase the productivity
but also face to face team meeting appear to be heartbeat of successful global virtual team and the team leader must reach out to them to encourage their participation
and team leader also should encourage all subgroup to have all discussion online so remote members will not feel isolated
