Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences consist of two parts: a condition and a result. These sentences can be categorized based on the type of condition they express. The zero conditional is used for situations that are always true.

There are two parts in a conditional sentence:            IF                           MAIN                                                reason/condition          resultReason can be:1) always true –ZERO CONDITIONAL2)real and possible to happen-FIRST CONDITIONAL3) unreal and unlikely to happen-SECOND CONDITIONAL

Second Conditional


Second Conditional is used to talk about things which are unreal-NOT TRUE OR NOT POSSIBLE-THINGS WHICH WON’T OR DON’T HAPPEN-in the present or in the future.It is formed:       IF                          MAIN Simple Past              Would + infinitive


1.  She (not be) __________lonely if she (have) ___________ more friends.2. If I (be) __________you, I (tell) ___________ the truth.3. Sarah (lose)___________ more weight if she (eat) ____________ less.4. If pigs (can/fly)___________, they (run) ___________ away from people.5. First Conditional


First Conditional is used to talk about things which are real and possible to happen-MAY HAPPEN-in the present or in the future.
It is formed:
          IF                       MAIN
  Simple Present       Will + infinitive


1.  If you (not hurry)___________, you (be) __________ late.2. I (not go) __________if you (not come) ___________ with me.3. If it (rain)__________, I (open) ___________ the umbrella.4. Our team (win)___________ if they (play) ___________ well.5. Harry (travel) ___________to Rome if he (get) ___________ a day off.6. Zero Conditional


Zero Conditional is used to talk about things which are always true-scientific facts, general truths etc….
 It is formed:
                IF                     MAIN
Simple Present         Simple Present
