ELIZABETHAN THEATRES

During the Elizabethan era, theatres were a central part of cultural life and came in various forms, each suited to different seasons and types of performances. Three main types of theatres existed:

Referred to by Shakespeare as the "wooden O", it could hold up 3000 spectator, and had as many as 20 sides

AMPHITHEATRE
in 1599, the famous Globe Theatre was built.
the 1st Amphitheatre ever was called "The Theatre"
a large open area surrounded by rows of seats
PLAYHOUSE
it was a raised platform without a front curtain but with a permanent facade at the back
INN-YARD
it was a common inn with an inner courtyard with balconies
