Slavery Started in the 1600s but didn't gain force until the late 1700s. The first slaves were in Jamestown and they were brought by Dutch traders. The slaves were treated more like indentured servants. they mainly worked on farming tobacco at the beginning of slavery. As time passed the number of slaves increased, by the 17 & 18 century the slaves worked on tobacco, rice, and indigo in plantations in the south. Slavery continued all the way up to 1865.
