Continued to sell grains even though production fell.

Compulsory Education and literacy rates

Lteracy rates rose from 40% to 94% for males and 13% to 64% for females.

Education made compulsory for 9 years for free and loaded with communist propaganda

Minority Nationalities

People who wanted more independence or hated Russia were arrested and shot.

Allowed to keep their language and ethnics but leaders were all elected and controlled by Moscow

Republics and minority races were controlled by Stalin.

Fall In standard of living

Many forced to live in cramped conditions with little or no running water and poor sanitation

Shortage of housing

Worsened by the fact that industrialization caused many people to move to the city

State Control of society

Members of the working class were given preferential treatment.
