The Story Of Stuff; Alex Bermúdez

The cycle of material usage and disposal significantly impacts both human health and the environment. Initially, resources are extracted and combined with toxic chemicals during production, resulting in contaminated products.

ECONOMY OF MATERIALS:

PRODUCTION:

After extracting the materials, they go into production and there we use energy to mix the resources with toxic chemicals to produce contaminated products. Few toxic chemicals have been tested to see if they impact human health. That's also why we bring toxic things into our homes, jobs, schools, and our bodies. The people who suffer the most from these chemicals are factory workers who are often women. Therefore, the food with the highest levels of various toxins in existence today is breast milk.

THE SYSTEM FEEDS ON OUR CONSUMPTION. 99% OF PRODUCTS AT 6 MONTHS ARE WASTE. THINGS ARE PRODUCED SO THAT THEY SPOIL OR BECOME "GARBAGE" AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. ADVERTISING AND MEDIA HELP PEOPLE BUY THESE PRODUCTS AND CONTINUE TO CONSUME THEM.

CONSUMPTION:

IN THE END, WE DON'T PAY FOR THINGS AT REAL PRICES BECAUSE THOSE WHO PAY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO LOSE THEIR LAND, THOSE WHO WORK EXPLOITED...ETC.

DISTRIBUTION:

OBJECTIVE:
SELL ALL THE "RUBBISH" PRODUCED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE
GOAL:
KEEP PRICES DOWN AND PEOPLE BUYING

DISPOSAL:

IN THIS LAST STAGE THE MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT USEFUL ARE DISCARDED. THESE ARE THROWN TO GARBAGE DUMPS OR IN SOME CASES THEY ARE BURNED AND THEN THROWN TO THE GARBAGE DUMP. WHEN THE PRODUCTS ARE BURNED, THE TOXINS THEY CARRY ARE EXPELLED AND INCORPORATED INTO THE NEW PRODUCTS IN THE SECOND STAGE OF THE SYSTEM.

EXTRACTION:

We're destroying the planet. We cut down trees, we destroy mountains to extract minerals, we finish off the water and we eliminate the animals. We are depleting resources. In 30 years we have exhausted 1/3 of the resources.
