The foundation of U.S. public schools is built on the premise that education is a right and a crucial equalizer in society. Education is valued not just for the knowledge it imparts but for its role in creating opportunities and fostering equality among students.

Weekly 1

Upon what foundation are U.S. public schools built?

Education is a right, not privilege.
Education helps create equality
Knowledge is valuable

What is worth teaching?

People are worth teaching.
It is not enough to teach a subject but to teach students.
I also believe that it is important to teach ethics.
I think that the common core is something worth teaching.
It helps create a rounded person

How do I view those I teach? (Daycare or am I actually teaching?)

Are they poor or not? (How do I define poor?)
Poor in money

Show them that money is not everything

Poor in pocket does not equate poor in heart

Poor in heart

Are they Humble or Hard Hearted?

How can I connect to someone unwilling to change.

How do they view themselves?

I view them as little heads, hearts, or hands
It is important to teach to all of these aspects.

With that in mind, it is also important the old saying, They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Everyone has potential to succeed.
Depends on their definition of success.
Every student is a child of God.

What is the role of school in society?

School also serves as preparatory to entering the world.
School is to teach children what they can do to contribute to the society they live in.
School can serve (although it should not) as a Day-Care.
Another obvious way is simply by allowing them to learn about different educational and career options.
One way of preparation is teaching kids how to work with one another.
School is supposed to be a place of enlightening.
It also applies to the mind, without knowledge one lives in darkness.
I also understand that enlightening signifies learning.
I like the word 'light' in the middle of the word enlightening, because school should not be a dark place where kids feel forced to go, but it should be somewhere they go that they feel lighter and safe.

How do I learn?

I learn when my teacher is enthusiastic about the subject that they teach.
Even if he/she has a monotone voice, if they are at least interested in what they teach then I will make an effort to be interested as well.
I learn by application.
In general, another great way I learn is simply by studying and I learn more in a lecture setting. (at least that is what I have seen)
I think that one of the best ways I learn is by seeing an example.

What is my work as learner and teacher?

My work as a teacher is to prepare kids; not only for tests but for real life experiences as well.
My work as a teacher is to care for the students
By extension my work is to care about the subject I teach.
My work as a teacher is to teach kids in a way that they can understand.
My work as a learner is to help others learn
My work as a learner is to support my teacher
My work as a learner is to apply myself

Who am I and what motivates me?

I want students to be able to express who they are
I want them to be have a chance to do better.
I want students to not only learn the subject, but learn principles
I am a service oriented person and a priesthood man.
I want to serve others and the Lord.
I want to help people realize their potential.
