Bob embarks on a significant journey to honor a long-standing commitment to his friend, Jimmy, traveling a thousand miles despite uncertainty about Jimmy's status. The narrative explores themes of trust and loyalty as Bob holds onto the belief that Jimmy, known for his steadfastness, will meet him as promised.
"In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned."
"When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago."
It was quite fast paced and suspicious. The ending was a shock!
Setting
Person vs Society is represented by Bob as he has traveled 1,000 miles to meet up with Jimmy and is a wanted man.
He is a fugitive and a criminal and the justice department (which in this case would be the society) is against him as well as trying to arrest him. He has to face this situation himself vs the "others".
p01
This text reminds me of the movie "The Matrix" where Cypher betrays Trinity, Neo and Morpheus in exchange for the agents plugging him into the Matrix. He did this because he wanted to be treated as a king, eat well and live in luxury.
The Matrix (1999)
At the same time, it also makes me remember and be grateful for the friends that have always kept in touch with me no matter where we end up because of Bob's willingness to meet Jimmy again.
This text reminds me of friends that have lost touch with me. It puts in to context that not everyone is going to be willing to have their loyalty set forever towards you because of how Jimmy treated Bob.
Connection to a movie
Connection To Self
"He'll never forget. I came a thousand miles to stand in this door tonight, and it's worth it if my old partner turns up."
"But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the TRUEST, staunchest old chap in the world."
Bob took a big risk by showing up because he isn't even sure if Jimmy is alive or where he is but still trusts for him to be there.
Bob displays his trust by travelling a thousand miles just to meet his long time friend (Jimmy) on a promised appointment 20 years after the agreement to do so.
Mood of Story
"In the doorway of a DARKENED hardware store, a man leaned with an unlighted cigar in his mouth."
"The time was barely 10 o'clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a TASTE of rain in them had well nigh depeopled the streets."
