Energy Of A River

The speed and volume of water in a river are influenced by several interrelated factors. The permeability of surrounding rocks plays a significant role; high permeability leads to greater infiltration and lower surface run-off, reducing the river'

Factors Affecting The Volume Of Water In A River

Roughness Of Channel
A rough channel reduces the speed of the river because of higher friction while a smooth channel increases the speed of the river because of lower friction
Wetted Perimeter
A large wetted perimeter causes the speed of the river to be low because there is alot more friction than a small wetted perimeter which causes the spped of the river to be high as there is less friction
Gradient Of channel
A gentle gradient causes the speed of the river to be slow whereas a steep gradient causes the speed of the river to be high

Factors Affecting The Speed Of The River

Permeability Of Rocks
high permeability increases infiltration and decreases run-off thus volume of water in the river is low while low permeability decreases infiltration and increases surface run-off thus volume of water in the river is high
Pressence Of Vegetation
Abundant vegetation decreases the amount of surface run-off thus reducing the amount of water in a river while sparse vegetation leads to high surface run-off, thus increasing the amount of water in a river
Climate
Places with higher rainfall have a higher volume of water in the river while places with low rainfall have a lower volume of water in the river
Size Of Drainage Basin
A small drainage basin results in a small volume of wayer while a large drainage basin results in a large volume of water
