The Indian Horse family holds a unique connection to God's Lake, a place where no one else could stay due to a powerful presence, making it an exclusive sanctuary for them. This lake becomes crucial when Benjamin returns from a residential school with tuberculosis, providing the family with safety, food, and a sense of abundance they had never experienced before.

Sual's Emotions

Nature connects Sual to his grandmother Naomi
When trying to remember his culture and teachings, he would go outside to think and listen to the wind, and the water.
Sual used nature to relax himself when he was feeling overwhelmed.

Shabogeesick was the first to bring a horse back to Manitoba from the north.
Indian Horse is Sual's family name, gained from his great-grandfather Shabogeesick.

The Ojibway people had never seen a horse before, they were scared at first and didn't know what to think about Shabogeesick bringing one to their land. Although it turned out to bring great teachings and become very helpful to the people and their everyday tasks. This is why the people decided to then give Shabogeesick the last name Indian Horse.

Naomi

She protects Sual from the white men who are trying to take him to residential schools.
She taught Sual to hunt and gather food for his family when his parents were drinking a lot.
Naomi made sure to never stop teaching Sual about his family's past.

Gods Lake

No one could live on God's Lake except for the Indian Horse family. "No one could stay there; whenever anybody tried, a powerful presence would overwhelm them and they would run away".(pg.20)
Family land

God's Lake was an escape for the family once Benjamin returned from the residential school with Tuberculosis. The lake promised a lot of safety to the Indian Horse family. Once the family arrived at the lake it provided exactly what the family needed.
