Before communism

Cuba was ruled by harsh leaders including Fulgencio Batista.

Once Cuba was the richest in the Caribbean it had many hotels, beaches and wonderful climate, but not all Cubans can share the countries wealth, because they earn little money.

Rebel groups began forming, one of their leaders was Fidel Castro, after lots of fights and two attemps to overthrow goverment he was finally succesful in 1959.

As a communist country

The goverment took over private buinesses and land.

The goverment didn't allow the people to speak for themselves or to disagree with them because if they
do they will be sent to jail.

People often did not get the food, clothing, and medicine needed and because of this huge numbers of Cubans fled the island.

Had a big desire for freedom.

Cuba and Soviet Union

As a communist country Cuba became an ally of the Soviet Union.

Near the 1960s, the soviets began sending military forces, including missiles, to Cuba, because the American navy found out and to prevent a war they remove the missiles they had sent.

The Soviet Union sent money, food and supplies to Cuba. But by 1991 goverment of the soviet Union collasped and could no longer help Cuba.
