Passives in Different Tenses:

Simple Present Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + am / is / are + verb3 (past participle)

exercise:

Active : The gardener waters the flowers every evening.
Passive: The flowers are watered by the gardener every evening

Negative from

structure:

Just insert ‘not‘ between ‘am’, ‘is’ or ‘are’ and Past Participle (the contracted forms are ‘isn’t’ and ‘aren’t’).

exercise:

Active : Helen doesn't drink anything in parties.
Passive: Nothing is drunk by Helen in parties.

Question Form

structure:

Am / Is / Are + Object + verb3 (past participle) ?

exercise:

Active : Who sells umbrellas?
Passive: Who are umbrellas sold by?

Simple Past Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + was / were + verb3 (past participle)

exercise:

Active : The teacher corrected the mistakes.
Passive: The mistakes were corrected by the teacher.

Question Form

structure:

Was / Were + Object + verb3 (past participle) ?

exercise:

Active : Did the little boy sell all the candy bars?
Passive: Were all the candy bars sold by the little boy?

Negative from

Active : Lauren didn't eat any apples.
Passive: No apples were eaten by Lauran.


Active : He didn't give the wallet.
Passive: The wallet wasn't given by him.

Simple Future Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + will + be + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : We will take the horses to the stable.
Passive: The horses will be taken to the stable.

Question Form

structure:

Will + object + be + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : Will the boss give me a job?
Passive: Will I be given a job by the boss?

Going To Future Passive

Affirmative Form

Structure:

Object + am / is / are + going to + be + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : I am going to pay his debts.
Passive: His debts are going to be paid by me.

Question Form

structure:

Am / is / are + object + going to + be + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : Is anybody going to invite me?
Passive: Am I going to be invited by anybody?

Present Progressive Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + am / is / are + being + verb3

exercises:

Active : The postman is delivering the mail.
Passive: The mail is being delivered by the postman.

Question Form

structure:

Am / is / are + Object + being + verb3 ?

exercises:

Active : Are they opening the gifts now?
Passive: Are the gifts being opened by them ? (now)

Simple Past Progressive Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + was / were + being + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : The boy was throwing the stone.
Passive: The stone was being thrown by the boy.

Question Form

structure:

Was / Were + Object + being + verb3 (past participle) ?

exercises:

Active : Was the suspect dragging you?
Passive: Were you being dragged by the suspect?

Present Perfect Passive

Affirmative Form

structure:

Object + have / has + been + verb3 (past participle)

exercises:

Active : They have cleaned the clinic.
Passive: The clinic has been cleaned by them.

Question Form

structure:

Have / has + object + been + verb3 (past participle)

Active : Have the police caught the man?
