Educators play a vital role in preparing children from low-income families for academic success. By fostering a growth mindset, teachers can help students understand that intelligence is not fixed and can be developed.

Children of poverty oftne have problems with Cognition.

Teachers should focus on core academic skills or the basics: how to study, take notes, organize, and remember key ideas from class.
Schools need to hire high performing teachers who will overcome the problem of underperforming students. Cognitive capacity is teachable.

Stress from home life

Low income parents'stress can often be transferred to the children and affect brain development and academic success.
Schools can work to build stronger relationships with the child which will help aleviate student stress and build trust.
Teach children coping skills so they can better deal with their stressors: sharing your own coping skills and teaching students how to brainstorm solutions to issues.
Teachers can reduce stress by embedding more classroom fun in academics.

Food Insecurity/ Poor Nutrition

Feeding America provides the Backpack Program
The community provides SNAP and WIC benefits to make sure that children have access to healthy foods at home
School provides free or reduced lunch and breakfast so that students can focus on learning and not their next meal
Teachers can have students take stretch breaks to oxygenate their bodies during the day

Low Access to Healthcare

Recess and Physical Education increase oxygen intake and help with better learning and cognitive function.
Teachers c an incorporate stretching and Yoga which increase metabolic controls so children can better manage themselves.
Exposure to lead is associated with poor working memory.
Students with health issues such as ear infections can have difficulty with sound discrimination and following directions.
Many schools offer mental health support for their students

Poor Attitude and Low Growth Mind-Set

Teachers can guide students in making smarter strategy choices and having a positive attitude.

Teachers can incorporate vocabulary into everyday rituals.
Vocabulary must be a key part of learning experience for students and new words need to be introduced often,
