Week of March 4, 2024

Students will embark on a week filled with diverse learning experiences across various subjects. In writing, they will begin crafting narratives about their most recent vacation, honing their skills through revisions focused on grammar, punctuation, and content.

Week of March 4, 2024

This is a week of lessons for a hypothetical week if I were teaching 4th grade in the future. I included the national standards and a description of the weeks lessons All standards came from https://www.ksde.org/

Week of March 4, 2024

Math

4.G.1- Introduction to Geometry
This week, we will learn about the different concepts in geometry. One day will be spent on points, line segments, and rays. Another day will be spent on angles, and we will use protractors and determine the type of angle. Another day will be spent on different lines (perpendicular and parallel) and the class will search around the room for different examples of these lines. The fourth day will be about finding these concepts in shapes. The fifth day we will either review or start on the next unit depending on how the students are doing with this topic.

Next week we will start on the next unit which is about using the concepts to identify different shapes (ex. Triangles have 3 angles, but there are three different types of triangles with different angles).

Reading

RL 4.1-4.3
This week we will start "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen. As this is the first week, students will get their copy of the story, and we will begin with reading aloud. After the first day, students will read independently during reading time. As they read, they will take notes on characters and settings. They will start to be assigned chapters for homework, and they will answer given questions so they prove they are reading the book. Class discussions will begin.

Next week, I will start having more discussions in small groups for students to discuss settings, summarizing different parts, etc. We will also talk about theme.

Science

PS3.A-B
This week, students will be introduced to energy. I will use roller coasters to demonstrate the difference between kinetic and potential energy. I will introduce a fun project to the students that involves creating a roller coaster with marbles so they can work hands-on with potential and kinetic energy.

Next week we will continue with energy but move onto light energy.

Writing

W.4.3
This week, students will start on their narratives. Their first narrative will be about their most recent vacation. Over the week, we will revise these papers for grammar, punctuation, and content. By the end of the week, students will understand the concepts of narrative papers.

Next week students will begin working on a narrative paper of their choice, and they will go through the process of revision again.

Social Studies

Geography- Maps
This week, we will work with maps. We will learn how to tell where a location is based on latitude and longitude, how to use a compass rose, how to tell the distance between locations based on scales, etc. This week is about using maps that are already created.

Next week they will begin creating maps of their neighborhoods or the school's surrounding area; the map will include a compass rose, a scale, and made-up latitude and longitude lines.
