Employee Rights

Roskaft v. RONA Inc
Mr. Roskaft in 2018 was off sick for three years but had been a full-time employee at Rona for more than 13 years prior. They reasoned that he was not able to come back to work within a reasonable period. Roskaft had been receiving long term disability benefits, and sued the company. The court ruled that due to Roskaft representing to his insurer that he was permanently disabled that Rona could reasonably terminate his contract. This lead to the precedent that the continued receipt of LTD may tip the balance in future cases.

Employment Equity

Nike
4 women who used to work at Nike claimed that Nike engaged in systemic gender pay discrimination and ignored rampant sexual harassment. They claimed that opportunities did not exist for women as they did for men in 2018. A spokesperson claimed that this behavior was not indicative of Nike but instead pertained to a few high-level manager. The pay gap was enormous, reaching around $20,000 less than what a man in the same position made. Managers would also sexually harass their employees and get away with it.

Health and Safety

Due to COVID-19, new safety standards are required for employees and employers. Sanitizing workplaces after a workplace has been exposed to COVID-19 is necessary as well as ensuring that customers follow social distancing guidelines by placing markers, lines and barriers to protect everyone. Hand sanitizer should also always be present.

Wages

Coronavirus
Due to COVID-19, the government has mandated a wage subsidy of 75% for select businesses. This allows employers to be able to pay employees and not have to lay off staff due to reduced businesses.
