Current treatment modalities for trauma and PTSD such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy target symptom reduction but do not necessarily resolve the underlying trauma.

One way in which the brain’s involvement in trauma has been addressed for treatment is the use of psychopharmaceutical medication, particularly anxiolytics, which reduces anxiety symptoms. Although pharmacotherapy might help stabilize PTSD symptoms by reducing feelings of anxiety and depression, long-term use of these medications can result in unwanted chemical dependencies, undesirable side effects, building tolerance to medications, unfortunate drug interactions, and so forth. Bringing the body into the treatment process has the potential to both shorten the length of treatment and address the interconnections among thoughts, feelings, neurobiology, and somatic responses in the survivor (Ogden et al., 2006).
