Balancing compassion with discipline is essential in teaching, as true discipline is rooted in learning and involves guiding students patiently and lovingly. The concept of discipline in a spiritual or educational context often means to chasten, which translates to purify, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a pure and dedicated learning environment.

However, compassion doesn’t nullify the need for discipline. The word discipline comes from the Latin word discere, “to learn,” or discipulus, “learner,” making a disciple a student and follower. To discipline in the Lord’s way is to lovingly and patiently teach. In the scriptures the Lord often uses the word chasten when speaking of discipline (see, for example, Mosiah 23:21; D&C 95:1). The word chasten comes from the Latin castus, meaning “chaste or pure,” and chasten means “to purify.” The Righteous Judge https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2016/10/the-righteous-judge?lang=eng#p12

Yet only through communication can human life hold meaning. The teacher’s thinking is authenticated only by the authenticity of the students’ thinking. The teacher cannot think for his students, nor can he impose his thought on them. Authentic thinking, thinking that is concerned about reality, does not take place in ivory tower isolation, but only in communication. If it is true that thought has meaning only when generated by action upon the world, the subordination of students to teachers becomes impossible. Because banking education begins with a false understanding of men as objects, it cannot promote the development of what Fromm calls “biophily,” but instead produces its opposite: “necrophily.”
