Order

Teaching place value to 2nd graders involves ensuring they understand the significance of digits, such as ones, tens, and hundreds. Common issues include students misinterpreting the value of digits, leading to incorrect answers, like 17+2=37.

Order

Order resonates with many subjects because it is the foundation of education. In education, we learn step by step in order, and we align our actions with our purpose.

2nd Grade math: Place Value

Prototype: Once students understand zero as a number and as a place holder when working with decimals. Adding and subtracting becomes very easy, they would know the answer without a doubt.
Examples of demonstrating an understanding of the concept: 6+0=6, 9.60=9.6
Misconception 2: Students don't understand the value of digits. Such as ones, tens, and hundreds.
When adding numbers together, students sometimes put the numbers together as the answer or add the wrong digits.

Examples of misunderstanding the concept: 17+2=37, 9+3=39

Needs
Social: working with each other without being distracted. Students may need a little reminder on what they need to focus on or redirecting their activities.
Academic: comprehension of vocabulary/common terms used in math. Students also
Physical: activities to help develop gross motor skills like running, jumping, skipping, throwing, catching, and balancing, as well as fine motor skills like writing, cutting, and buttoning clothes
Emotional: students’ motivation is based on getting rewards and compliments from the teacher. More of extrinsic motivation.
