Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly used to alleviate symptoms of depression by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. These medications are also effective in treating conditions such as bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and panic disorders.
* use cautiously in adolescents and or depressed/suicidal pts, as suicidal thoughts/actions could increase
* avoid use in pts w/impaired renal or hepatic function or diabetes
* renal/liver function tests before beginning therapy
* do not use an SSRI in combination with a MAOI
* do not use an SSRI in combination with St John's wort
