Born in 1898 in the small town of Lessines Belgium, René Magritte helped tear the established art of the time to shreds. He described himself less of a painter and more of thinker with paintings. He associated himself with the French surrealist movement, and moved to Paris in 1927 to be closer to them. As was the norm for surrealist artists, his work questioned the viewers preconditioned perceptions of reality. He often juxtaposed normal objects in unusual situations, such as apples, bowler hats ( of which he was very keen on ) and others. However, unlike other surrealists of his time, Magritte pursued a figurative style rather than using automatic techniques. His effect on the art form is very distinct. Magritte use of simple graphics and everyday imagery is reflected on modern pop artists.
