While much of Maher's research is grounded in Mathematical Reasoning, she carries a special place for Learning Cognition in her heart. Maher is a member of the Piaget Society and has been president or chair of several national and international groups specializing in the cognitive sciences, including the North American Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA, President 1990-91; USA representative for International Executive Committee 1991-95) and the American Education Research Association (AERA, Special Interest Group Chair 1998-2003).
While Dr. Maher regards her work as primarily constructivist in nature, there are many aspects of sociocultural theory present in her research questions, methods, and outcomes. Many of her findings place heavy emphasis on the classroom culture, specifically where student reasoning and questioning is concerned. Further, her research shows great reliance on the interaction of students to develop learning, which is more indicative of a sociocultural or emergent perspective.
