MAKING CONNECTIONS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Encouraging students to engage in artistic activities outside the classroom can be facilitated through various community and digital platforms. Museums like the Gardiner Museum offer free admission and outdoor programming, while the AGO provides virtual programs for researching local artists.

social trends

TikTok always has video trends (recently Adult Swim video promos got very creative). Maybe not engaging in this specific one, but the idea of students doing a similar task, but in their own way (like above)
There is an instagram trend where people re-create an art piece in their personal art style (usually a character). Students could participate with the teacher providing creating prompt or using an existing piece (maybe something well-known but also avoiding appropriation). If consent is given, this could even be posted to a class instagram by the teacher (turning comments off) but for safety maybe just using board-approved sites.
#Inktober uses prompts to draw something new everyday, this could be done in class. It might be interesting to reuse the same prompts (5 prompts over 4 weeks) and see how the drawings evolve
A few years ago there was a "Draw my Life" trend on YouTube, students could tell their life story in a painting or comic style but with the change of using no audio/text

Community

Have students brainstorm ways they can create art for the community (ex. murals, paintings as gifts, photographing the community, portrait of residents, environmental installations)
Art Contests for Youth
Ontario Art Education Association contest
Canadian Schools Art Contests
Oshawa Peony Contests (photos, paintings)

museums

Gardiner Museum -Free admission (unguided tour) -outdoor programming available
Virtual Programs at the AGO
Students can visit the museum and research local artists

Initiatives

Poster making to raise awareness (ex. Earth Day, Plastic Use, Women's Day etc) -the National Day of Mourning runs poster contests, students also learn WHMIS safety and workplace safety while creating them
Art for a Just Recovery This art kit was developed during the global COVID-19 pandemic
