Phoebe's World

The bustling streets of Leeds are filled with a variety of street sellers offering everything from pies and flowers to birds in cages. Children play on the crowded pavements, where the air is thick with smoke from tall chimneys, leaving soot-covered buildings and streets.

Mrs Stott's Living room; red glow; thick red velevet curtains, polished wood desk and matching chairs, huge fire & mantelpiece,thick patterned rugs, plush armchairs, side-tables, plants, mirrors, book lined shelves, collections of small objects, some in glass cages, books on the desk, a School Day book, a personal journel; incense smell sometimes
Industrial training in the ground floor wings of the rear block; most of the girls' wing was a wash house; girls did domestic duties around the school & sewing; the Guardians monitored children once apprenticed
Exercise yard; outer all of courtyard created a covered walkway so children could exercise in the rain; daily routine included cricket; extended walks twice a week; trips to Harewood House & the theatre

Boys in North wing & girls in South wing; children divided by age; 2-6 yrs; 6 to 10 yrs; 10 to 16 yrs; some older inmates; Master & Matron each have an office and sitting room; teacher's common room in the central block; school chapel in central block; separate staircase for each wing
3 storey building constructed of red brick with stone detailing & a Welsh slate roof; main entrance through an arched doorway; stone sign 'Moral and Industrial Training School 1848); 3 storey & 16 pane window lights stairwell beyond; 3 storey bay windows to each side & Dutch gables; 9 bay wing each side of central block
Located on Beckett Street on the outskirts of town; overlooking the town; tall and imposing building dominates the landscape; lawns & trees to the front; focus on facilities for pauper children initially but main workhouse with infirmary & chapel opened 1861, nw infirmary 1872
Porters Lodge: brick walled room with a large desk and chair behind, smaller table and chair; leads off to offices on one side and the main residential blocks on the other; portraits of the Leeds Board of Guardians

Smaller backstreets, yards and courtyards with groups of children hanging aroun, playing noisy street games
Pollution: tall chimneys with smoke billowing out and then falling back onto the city as soot; soot covered buildings and streets; smoky smell; lack of trees or greenery
Crowded pavements in town centre with people rushing about and with many different kinds of street sellers e.g. pies, pots and pans, birds in cages, flowers, watercress; children playing
Crowded streets in the town centre with horse drawn vehicles, bicycles and barrows jostling for space; stopped trams and buses causing congestion

Small and crowded living room with a fire place, mantelpiece, Large table and chairs, 2 armchairs, dresser, small chest, plants, mirrors, rugs, book case, thick velvet curtains, lamp on the table, wall lamps
Basement kitchen for cooking, washing up, laundry with a black range and tin bath; only room with hot water
Tall terrace house in a row of workers's terraces, dirty red brick, set on a side road of similar houses
