Road Manager

A road manager's role involves traveling extensively with performers, making it challenging to maintain a stable home life and relationships. Despite the personal sacrifices, the job offers unique perks such as global travel, luxury accommodations, and a taste of the celebrity lifestyle.

Benefits

There are many benefits of this kind of job. One would get to travel the world in business class with (hopefully) some great performer(s), stay in the nicest hotels and go to the nicest restaurants, and one would get the celebrity treatment as well. I see how there would be disadvantages, however, for me, the positives outweigh the bad. This is a job I could see myself doing.

Challenges

Seeing as a road manager goes on tour with performer(s), they wouldn’t be home for a long period of time ranging anywhere from a few months to a year. It would be difficult (but not impossible) to have a partner or a family, and one would miss out on important moments in their families lives.
That’s where my solution is to just mingle with the performer ;)

Education Pathway

There’s no specific schooling or program in the “road manager” field, however, a business, marketing or communications degree would make sense in this line of work. All of those programs can be completed at Humber College with tuitions ranging from $4,000-$7,000 and program length ranging from 2-4 years.

The pictures featured in this mindmap are pictures of a road manager, Barbara Vitali and the performers she has been working for for the past 10 years.

Skills x Knowledge

One would have to be a problem solver, able to deal with any situation that may need to be fixed to ensure the tour goes smoothly. Time management as well would be an asset, to not make the performer(s) late. Also, communication skills would be a must, as the road manager would basically be communicating for the performer(s) when planning and booking.

Typical Salary Range

According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary of a road manager nationwide is $73,613/year. I can imagine however, that the more popular the performer(s), the more the road manager and the rest of the crew would make.

Expectations

A road manager is responsible for caring for the performer(s) and makes sure that the tour goes smoothly without problems for the performer(s) and their companions. The road manager also plans the tour bus or flight, hotels, and meals.
