The Byzantine Empire experienced significant turmoil and transformation from military campaigns to internal revolts. During the period marked by the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Byzantine emperor Romanos IV led a large army into Asia, only to suffer a devastating defeat, making him the first emperor prisoner in over 900 years.
