Human communication involves various language skills that allow us to convey and understand messages. Listening involves interpreting the meaningful sounds of language using context, language, and world knowledge.

Functions

Is a reason why we communicate. Every time we speak or write, we do so for a reason. Whate we say has a porpuse or function. i.e. apologising, greeting, clarifying, inviting, etc...

Phonology

The study of the sound features used in a language to communicate meaning. Phonemes, word stress, sentence stress and intonation are included.

Lexis

Individual words or sets of words, units of vocabulary which have a specific meaning.

Grammar

How we combine, organise and change parts of words, words and groups of words to make meaning

Speaking

Using speech to communicate meanings to other people

Listening

Making sense of the meaningful sounds of language, we do this by making use of the context, language and our knowledge of the world.

Writing

Communicating a message by making signs on a page.

Reading

Is a receptive skill, this means it involves responding to text... in other words this is is making sense of written text.
