Furmaniuk Privacy Situation

In situations involving custodial parents requesting personal information about students from a teacher librarian, several protocols are in place to ensure compliance with privacy laws and the safety of students.

Furmaniuk Privacy Situation

Situation: Custodial parent requests personal information about a student from Teacher Librarian (note: in my situation, the school library is also a public library, with records kept by public library staff/record-keeping software)

Does the situation involve the immediate safety of student(s)?

No
Is this information already available in the student's OSR?

No (ie library borrowing record/current checkouts)

Request permission from student

Permission denied

Remind student that Kitchener Public Library does not maintain records of previously checked-out items that have been RETURNED

Could fulfilling the request jeopardise safety of student(s)? (ie disclosure of preferred name/gender)

Yes - there is cause for concern

Alert administrator to request and cause for concern. Indicate intention to DENY request with reference to appropriate WRDSB policy (ie WRDSB A1235 Accomodation of Persons Who Identify as Transgender) (https://www.wrdsb.ca/wp-content/uploads/March-2021-AP1235-Accom-of-Persons-who-Identify-as-Transgender-Guidelines.pdf)
