Sir Edmund Hillary
A renowned New Zealand mountaineer and explorer, Sir Edmund Hillary is best known for being the first to summit Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Tenzing Norgay, which brought him international acclaim.

Sir Edmund Hillary History Died January 2008 In 1989 remarried June Mulgrew Was made New Zealands High Commissioner to India Jet boated the River Ganges In 1975 his wife and younger daughter died in 1958 led an expedition to the South Pole on tractors Built the first school and hospitals in that part of Nepal Raised $ 30'000 for the Sherpa people. Had three kids names were Peter, Sarah and Belinda Married Louise Mary Rose in 1953 He climbed Mt Everest in 1953 In 1951 & 1952 he went on expeditions to observe Mt Everest In 1950 he gained experience climbing Swiss & Austrian alps In 1939 he made his first major climb on Mt Olliver He was sent back to NZ after a boating accident. He joined the R.A.F and went to Solomon Islands Lived in Auckland Worked as a beekeeper He attended University for 2 years Struggled at High School Attended Auckland Grammer Had his first experience of mountains His childhood memories are mostly happy ones Finished primary 2 years early Attended the primary in Tuakua He was very shy Father-bee keeper Mother-school teacher Had a brother and sister Loved the outdoors Born 20 August 1919 in Auckland Effect on people Subtopic By raising 30'000 dollars for the Sherpa people He affected the Sherpa people by building the first school and hospitals often by hand He inspires awe in to other climbers. In New Zealand young people know what he looks like because his face is on the $5 note. He affected the whole world when he reached the summit of Mt Everest. Personal Challenges Having to prepare the funeral for his wife and daughter There were crevasses hidden under the snow Having to build houses and hospitals in such a remote place Getting shot in the R.A.F Oxygen problems Climbing up vertical walls of ice with heavy packs Risk of getting hypothermia They had to tackle temperatures of 27 degrees They had to carry heavy oxygen cylinders and packs On the way to the South Pole they would have run into problems Suffered bad burns in a boating accident Wife and younger daughter died in plane crash
