Two primary theories explain how elderly individuals interact with society: Activity Theory and Disengagement Theory. Activity Theory posits that elderly people who engage in activities such as playing bingo, gardening, or joining book clubs maintain a positive self-concept and achieve greater life satisfaction.

Cummings and Henry 1961 argue this is a natural withdrawal from society

Disengagement theory

allows the elderly to adapt to change possibly illness
helps with the burden of death if elderly are not actively engaged
elderly people have time to reflect on their experiences
Elderly people do not participate in soceity
this can cause lonliness and depression
widowhood
transport issues
this may be due to poor health
