Explicit strategy instruction requires a learner-centered approach to teach, and both the teacher and the students must share the responsibility of learning. By focusing on learning strategies, learning will be enhanced.

WHAT STRATEGY WILL I USE TO INSTRUCT STUDENTS?

English language learners will learn more effectively from using strategies in combination. Understanding the potential of each of the strategy types, can help teachers provide the best opportunity for strategy training in the classroom.

WHAT TYPES OF?

Compensation strategies. Used to make up for something that isn´t known or immediately accessible from memory.

Social strategies. The learner works with one or more students or simply learn from the environment.

Cognitive strategies. Involve any type of practice activity.

Metacognitive strategies. Involve thinking about learning.

Learning strategies are techniques that facilitate the process of learning by understanding, retaining and applying knowledge. Not all strategies work equally well for all learners. Exposure to different types allows students to develop their own personal menu of strategies.
