INFORMAL GAZE

FORMAL GAZE

ACTIVE LISTENING
MODELS OF LISTENING

RESPONDING

RESPONSE SHOULD BE WELL-MANNERED AND DEMONSTRATE THAT YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD WHAT WAS COMMUNICATED

EVALUATING

EVALUATING REQUIRES THAT THE LISTENER KEEPS AN OPEN MIND ON THE MESSAGES THEY ARE RECEIVING AND DOESN'T JUMP ON CONCLUSIONS ABOUT WHAT IS BEING SAID

INTERPRETING

INTERPRETATION OF THE MESSAGE BUILDS ON, AND ENHANCES, UNDERSTANDING. INTERPRETATION MEANS CONSIDERING FACTORS SUCH AS CONTEXT IN WHICH THE MESSAGE WAS SENT

REMEMBERING

REMEMBERING REQUIRES FOCUS. AN EFFECTIVE LISTENER NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO REMEMBER THE MESSAGES THEY ARE RECEIVING IN ITS ENTIRELY

UNDERSTANDING

ONCE THE MESSAGE HAD BEEN HEARD, THE NEXT STEP IS TO UNDERSTAND. THIS MEANS TYPING TOGETHER ALL THE ELEMENT OF HEARING TO CREATE A COHERENT UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WAS COMMUNICATED

HEARING

NOT ONLY DOES IT REFER TO THE PHYSICAL ACT OF HEARING, BUT ALSO TO PICK UP ON NON-VERBAL AND OTHER SIGNS, BODY LANGUAGE AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

TEN PRINCIPLES OF LISTENING

10. WAIT AND WATCH FOR NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATIONS

GESTURES, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND EYE MOVEMENTS CAN BE ALL IMPORTANT

9. LISTEN FOR IDEAS - NOT JUST WORDS

YOU NEED TO GET THE WHOLE PICTURE, NOT JUST ISOLATED BITS AND PIECES

8. LISTEN TO THE TONE

VOLUME AND TONE BOTH ADD TO WHAT SOMEONE IS SAYING.

7. AVOID PERSONAL PREJUDICE

TRY TO BE IMPARTIAL. DON'T BECOME IRRITATED AND DON'T LET THE PERSON'S HABITS OR MANNERISMS DISTRACT YOU FROM WHAT THE SPEAKER IS REALLY SAYING

6. BE PATIENT

A PAUSE, EVEN A LONG PAUSE, DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THE SPEAKER HAS FINISHED. BE PATIENT AND LET THE SPEAKER CONTINUE IN THEIR OWN TIME

5. EMPATHISE

TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE OTHER PERSON'S POINT OF VIEW. LOOK AT THE ISSUE FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE. LET GO OF PRECONCEIVED IDEAS

4. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

FOCUS ON WHAT IS BEING SAID. DON'T DOODLE, SHUFFLE PAPERS, LOOK OUT THE WINDOW, ETC. THESE BEHAVIOURS DISRUPT THE LISTENING PROCESS AND SEND MESSSAGES TO THE SPEAKER THAT YOU ARE BORED OR DISTRACTED

3. PUT THE SPEAKER AT EASE

HELP THE SPEAKER TO FEEL FREE TO SPEAK. REMEMBER THEIR NEEDS AND CONCERNS. NOD OR USE OTHER GESTURES OR WORDS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONTINUE

2. PREPARE YOURSELF TO LISTEN

RELAX. FOCUS ON THE SPEAKER. PUT OTHER THINGS OUT OF MIND

1. STOP TALKING

DON'T TALK, JUST LISTEN

UNIT 1: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

TIME MANAGEMENT
OVERCOMING PROCRASTINATION

THE PROCRASTINATION HABIT IS A COMFORTABLE BED, EASY TO GET IN, BUT DIFFICULT TO GET OUT OF

FACEBOOK, INTERNET, ETC. ARE ALL HAVE BEEN USED AS A FORM OF PROCRASTINATION

SYMPTOMS OF POOR MANAGEMENT

FEELING STRESS OR OVERWHELMED BY LACK OF TIME, STUDYING AT HOURS WHEN YOU ARE NOT FRESH OR PRODUCTIVE, PROCRASTINATING, CRAMMING THE NIGHT BEFORE, NOT GETTING THE ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME

STRATEGIES

STRATEGY #6: PRIORITIZE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS

WHEN STUDYING, GET THE HABIT OF STARTING WITH THE MOST DIFFICULT ONES. YOU'LL BE REFRESH AND HAVE MORE ENEGY TO TAKE THEM ON WHEN YOU ARE AT YOUR BEST

STRATEGY #5: WEEKLY REVIEWS

EACH WEEK, EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT, REVIEW YOUR ASSIGNMENTS, NOTES AND AGENDA

STRATEGY #4: DEDICATED WORKPLACES

DETERMINE A PLACE FAR FROM DISTRACTIONS (CELLPHONES, LAPTOPS, TELEVISION, ETC.

STRATEGY #3: PLAN OF BLOCKS OF STUDY (TIME AND BREAKS)

GIVE YOURSELF AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A REST, SNACK, RELAX OR OTHERWISE, REFRESH OR RE-ENERGIZE YOURSELF

STRATEGY #2: DAILY TO-D0 LIST

USE YOUR AGENDA TO WRITE A TO-DO LIST FOR THE EVENING; CROSS OUT TASKS AS YOU COMPLETE THEM

STRATEGY #1: USE YOUR AGENDA

PLAN YOUR HOMEWORK, RECORD YOUR HOMEWORK, ASSIGNMENTS DUE DATES AND ANY TESTS OR EXAMS

STUDY STRATEGIES
#6: WHAT IS IMPORTANT?

HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

#5: STUDY WITH SOMEONE

HELP EACH OTHER BY GIVING QUESTIONS, ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

#4: USE MEMORY TRICKS TO HELP YOU

TOOLS SUCH AS ACRONYMS, FUNNY PHRASES, AND UNUSUAL ILLUSTRATION TO HELP YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARN

#3: RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW

STUDYING IS NO FUN, BUT WHAT IS WORSE IS FAILING A CLASS. STUDY HARD AND THE PAYOFF WILL BE HUGE

#2: GET ORGANIZED

GATHER UP ALL YOUR CLASS NOTES, MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT MISS ANY AND MAKE AN OUTLINE OF EACH TOPIC

#1: FOLLOW THE TEACHER

TEACHERS WANT YOU TO KNOW WHAT THEY TAUGHT YOU. YOUR BEST BET IS TO STUDY THE NOTES AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE POINTS

SMART GOALS
SETTING SMART GOALS

TIME-BOUND

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A "TIME-SET" AS A DEADLINE, SO YOUR GOAL IS UNENDING

RELEVANT

MAKE GOALS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE

ATTAINABLE

GOALS MUST BE SOMETHING YOU ARE CAPABLE OF REACHING

MEASUREABLE

ALL GOALS SHOULD HAVE A WAY TO EVALUATE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WERE ACCOMPLISHED

SPECIFIC

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH?

UNIT 2: WHO AM I?

LEFT BRAIN AND RIGHT BRAIN THEORY
RIGHT BRAIN

HOLISTIC, CONCRETE, RANDOM

COLOR SENSITIVE

CONCRETE

THEY WANT TO SEE, FEEL OR TOUCH THE REAL OBJECT

PREFER TO SEE WORDS IN CONTEXT AND TO SEE FORMULAS WORK

INTUITIVE

OPEN-MINDED-RANDOM EXPERIMENTS

MAKES JUDGEMENTS SUBJECTIVE

LOOKS AT SIMILARITIES

LEFT BRAIN

LINEAR, SYMBOLIC, SEQUENTIAL

PROCESS INFORMATION IN A LINEAR MANNER

TAKE PIECES TO THE PUZZLES, LINE THEM UP AND ARRANGE THEM IN LOGICAL ORDER

LIST MAKERS

GOOD SPELLERS

NO TROUBLE PROCESSING SYMBOLS, MEMORIZING VOCABULARY WORDS AND MATH FORMULA

RATIONAL

RESPONDS TO VERBAL INSTRUCTION

CONTROLLED SYSTEMATIC EXPERIMENTS

ANALYTIC READER

PREFERS TALKING AND WRITING

CONTROLS FEELINGS

TRIARCHIC THEORY OF INTELLIGENCE
KINDS OF INTELLIGENCE

PRACTICAL THINKING (CONTEXTUAL)

FOCUSES ON SELECTING AND SHAPING REAL-WORLD ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES

A PRACTITIONER IS PERSUASIVE AND MAYBE ENTERTAINING, BUT LACKS SUBSTANCE IN THINKING

CREATIVE THINKING (EXPERIENTIAL)

FOCUSES ON DEVELOPING, APPLYING NEW IDEAS AND CREATING SOLUTIONS

A CREATOR IDEAS EASILY, BUT IS UNABLE TO ANALYZE THESE IDEAS OR PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE

ANALYTICAL THINKING (COMPONENTIAL)

FOCUSES ON PLANNING, MONITORING, REFLECTION AND TRANSFER

AN ANALYZER FARE WELL IN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENTS BUT , IS NOT LIKELY TO MAKE A CREATIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELDS

WHAT TYPE OF LEARNER ARE YOU?
LEARNING STYLES

TACTILE LEARNERS (KINESTHETIC)

LEARN BY TOUCH

AUDITORY LEARNERS

LEARN BY HEARING

VISUAL LEARNERS

LEARN BY SIGHT

UNIT 5: CAREER CHOICES AND PATHWAYS

COMMUNITY HOURS
COMMUNITY SERVICE

NON-PAYING JOB PERFORMED BY ONE PERSON OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THEIR COMMUNITY OR INSTITUTION

COMMUNITY SERVICE IS A DISTINCT FORM OR VOLUNTEERING SINCE IT'S NOT ALWAYS PERFORMED ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS

APPRENTICESHIP

A SYSTEM OF TRAINING A NEW GENERATION OF PRACTITIONERS OF A TRADE OR PROFESSION WITH ON-JOB-TRAINING AND OFTEN SOME ACCOMPANYING STUDY

UNIT 4: REAL LIFE APPLICATION

MAKING A BUDGET
WHAT IS DEBT?
AN OBLIGATION THAT REQUIRES ONE PARTY, THE DEBTOR, TO MAY MONEY OR OTHER AGREED-UPON VALUE TO ANOTHER PARTY, THE CREDITOR
