Operation Management
I decided to select Tesla for my Mind Map exercise because is a company I have been following for the past couple of years. I believe in what they stand for and wanted to show the whole class in detail their mission to innovate and create a better world and culture while disruptive one of the oldest and traditional markets.
Tesla is not your typical car, they don't have your typical car structure and mechanics. Hence unlike the typical car, Tesla models do not contain a radiator, transmission and a lot of other parts typical cars need maintenance in order to properly operate. Hence most of the repairs outside of the battery and body are digital repairs that can be fixed through the network. Moreover the status of any Tesla can be monitor, tracked and controlled digitally by the customers and when needed or asked by the company for software repairing efforts.
Customers can charge a Tesla vehicle at home or a variety of charging locations across the US and selected locations through Europe, Asia & the Middle East. Charging a full battery typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour with the supercharger and customers are able to track the progress of the charging through their phone while taking a coffee for a cheaper price and cleaner process than the traditional gas vehicles.
Its important for Tesla to expand their reach and quantity on charging stations on their globalization mission.
Tesla's Batteries typically range between 220 - 310 miles depending of its power pack model. As expected, the company have been developing a battery P100D that has been recorded to travel 670 miles on a single charge. However this range was achieved by driving at low speeds of less than 25 mph which isn't exactly practical.
Tesla's dealerships are located inside shopping centers which are visited by thousands of customers daily from a wide array of segments although most of the sales are made online. This is another change from the traditional dealerships where they rely on the middle men for their sales. Moreover increasing the access and penetration to customers exponentially compared to the traditional dealership which customers have to drive by in order for customers get a closer look. Additionally they cut the
Tesla has been able to enter multiple customer segments (Model S - Premium Sedan, Model X - SUV) and its expected to enter both the Truck segment with the Tesla Semi and the affordable segment with the Model 3. However they are not just entering to these segments, they are creating a groundbreaking leading model which exceeds anything encountered and have forced the competition to adapt in order to compete and remain relevant.
The environmental friendly trend created by Tesla is not limited to just cars, to continue fulfilling their vision, the company acquired Solar City to use their renewable energy core competence to produce Solar Roof, Powerwall & Powerpack to enable homeowners, businesses and utilities to use, manage and take advantage of this renewable energy source.
What is unique about Tesla is that the customer rarely speaks with a representative, all of the information, customization and execution is done online. However if the customer would like to view a Tesla in person or test drive it, they could go to any of their stores close-by. Thus they combine both the traditional model and add the more digitalized model of no intermediaries to purchase a car.
When you think about Tesla, the first words that come to mind are innovation, disruptive/revolutionary, green/conserve and ambitious. Founded in 2003, they wanted to prove from the get-go that electric vehicles can be even better, more fun and faster than traditional gasoline cars. Nowadays the company is much more than just electric cars, its vision is to have a world with zero-emmisions which are detrimental to the environment by creating electric cars & other products powered by unlimited renewable energy.
Tesla plans to become as much vertically integrated and machine learning automated by building one of the largest factories and installing 150+ robots to conduct the majority of the manufacturing process. In addition, they are leveraging their core competence by utilizing their renewable energy resources to power the factory. Within the factory they don't only create the electric cars but also the batteries for the car and other products.
