The Chinese's built the Canadian Pacific Railway which is the 2nd largest railway in all of Canada, the railway is now a transcontinental railway in Canada and the United States with links to major ports on the west and east port's.
A city called Barker Ville was the first established Chinese community in Canada, than in 1881-1884 17,000 Chinese moved to Canada to help with the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and after the building of it most Chinese stayed in Canada moving to Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ontario and Quebec. Now the greater Toronto area has 631,050 Chinese people which is the area that holds the most Chinese people in Canada.
Many Asians moved to Canada to provide cheap labor. More than 15,000 Chinese came to Canada in the start of the 1880's to build an incredibly dangerous & difficult part of the CPR (Canadian pacific railway) they moved to Canada to provide cheap labor because of the poor economic conditions in China at the time and since Canada was wealthy compared to China.
The Chinese immigration act in 1923 was the finishing of anti-Chinese racism and policies including the head taxes it replaced. All the Chinese people living in Canada even the Chinese born there had to register with the government or they would end up risking fines, detainment or deportation.
When the Irish arrived to Canada they helped with the labor shortage, the Irish played a crucial role in the building of the Rideau canal which is now one of the most important water ways in Canada. in 1847, more than 38,000 Irish refugees arrived in Toronto. The healthy refugees were urged to move to a different place because there were to many sick refugees that could not go any further. The Irish people moved to Canada because of the great famine in the 1840's. It made 1,500,000 - 2,000,000 Irish people leave Ireland and hundreds of thousands of them went to British North America. The Irish people were looking for a better life in Canada after the economical collapse because of the great famine.
When the Irish moved to Canada they were met with tension and hostility. The reason why many immigrants were met with hostility is because typhus was making it's way into Canadian cities, there was more competition for employment which led to local labourers and protestant catholic tension around Irish communities. In St. John, New Brunswick they saw several riots about this.
The Ukrainians have contributed to populating the western provinces and launched foundations of thriving agriculture. Ukrainians were also able to build a strong community in Canada building churches, community centers and cultural organizations to make sure there language and traditions are not forgotten.
Many of the early Ukrainian settlers established themselves in the Prairies, they arrived by canoe. In the 1700's to 1800's they made their homes close to fur-trading posts. A fur trading post is a place where manufactured goods from Europe are traded for fur harvested from indigenous people. The Ukrainians settled near the fur posts such as- Fort Garry, Manitoba and Fort Edmonton. At first, the Ukrainian settlement on the Prairies was slow, most of the early settlers came from Eastern Canada. This ended up changing once the Pacific railway was built between 1875-1885. From 1896 - 1914, Canada welcomed more than 3,000,000 immigrants, most of the immigrants settled in the Prairie provinces. In western Canada the railway influenced where the settlements grew. Most of the immigrants chose the homesteads (a farmhouse) and towns near the railway. Between 1896 and 1914 more than 555,000 immigrants settled on the Prairies and around 170,000 of these immigrants were Ukrainians.
The reason why Ukrainians moved to Canada is because they were looking for a better life and better economic support, most of the Ukrainians settled in the western provinces. Over 105,000 Ukrainians moved to Canada because of war. The government received 628,492 temporary resident applications. Ukrainians first arrived in Canada 19th century. The main reasons why the Ukrainians came to Canada in the 19th century is because the Canadian government promoted immigration of farmers.
Thousands of the Ukrainians were interned across Canada when the Canadian government's First National Internment Operations occurred during 1914-1920 The Ukrainians were interned not because they did a crime but because of where they came from.
