The main charecter, George Milton is an intellegent and also a cynical man.

The crash signaled the beginning of the 12-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries

The book is based around the 1936 "Great Depression" following the Wall Street Crash.

Beyond the idyllic atmosphere of The Salinas river there is a sense of danger the way that all of the animals have to fight for survival.

The theme of the suvival of the fittest may link to the main charecters, George and Lennie.

The opening describes the river and it's surroundings. "It has slipped twinkling over yellow sands"
